McArthur is a census-designated place (CDP) in Shasta County, California, United States. The population was 365 at the 2000 census. McArthur is a very small agricultural driven township located 4 mi east of Fall River Mills. The smaller of the two townships, McArthur houses the Intermountain Fairgrounds and the Fall River Mills Joint Unified Schools District High School campus.
McArthur operates entirely through the Fall River Valley Chamber of Commerce, and includes The McArthur Fire Protection District, Pine Grove Cemetery District.
McArthur is located at 41°3′2″N 121°23′59″W / 41.05056°N 121.39972°W (41.050534, -121.399816).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.0 square miles (2.6 km²), all of it land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 365 people, 150 households, and 100 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 361.5 people per square mile (139.5/km²). There were 168 housing units at an average density of 166.4/sq mi (64.2/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 71.78% White, 5.21% Native American, 20.27% from other races, and 2.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 24.93% of the population.
There were 150 households out of which 30.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% were married couples living together, 4.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 29.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 112.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 106.9 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $16,116, and the median income for a family was $23,125. Males had a median income of $27,188 versus $19,750 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $9,813. About 36.3% of families and 36.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 44.1% of those under age 18 and 36.0% of those age 65 or over.
In the state legislature McArthur is located in the 4th Senate District, represented by Republican Sam Aanestad, and in the 2nd Assembly District, represented by Republican Doug LaMalfa. Federally, McArthur is located in California's 2nd congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of R +13 and is represented by Republican Wally Herger.
