Mentone is located at GR1.(34.064663, -117.120242)
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 16.2 km² (6.2 mi²). 16.1 km² (6.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.16% is water. California State Highway 38 serves as its main street, called Mentone Boulevard as one enters Mentone from Redlands, then Mill Creek Road as one leaves the city proper and heads north toward Angelus Oaks.
There is no Mentone Beach, a sly reference by locals for the usually-dry Santa Ana Riverbed on the north side of the community. World's famous jerky is located here.
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 7,803 people, 2,757 households, and 1,891 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 483.6/km² (1,252.7/mi²). There were 2,946 housing units at an average density of 182.6/km² (473.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 74.47% White, 4.72% African American, 1.10% Native American, 2.97% Asian, 0.21% Pacific Islander, 12.43% from other races, and 4.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 25.07% of the population.
There were 2,757 households out of which 39.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.9% were married couples living together, 13.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% were non-families. 24.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.33.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 30.7% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.9 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,225, and the median income for a family was $47,786. Males had a median income of $40,888 versus $29,495 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,781. About 8.8% of families and 10.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.7% of those under age 18 and 1.5% of those age 65 or over.
Mentone is not incorporated and has no mayor or city council, although the area is influenced by the City of Redlands. Its public schools are part of the Redlands Unified School District. Police and Fire services are provided by San Bernardino County. Property taxes are collected by San Bernardino County.
Lockheed Propulsion Company, a space and missile systems division of Lockheed Aircraft, operated a plant here in the 1960s-1980s. It provided the rocket motors for the emergency escape system tower atop Apollo spacecraft. As it conducted open air engine tests there, residual chemical contamination from the propellants burned have been detected at the site.
