Finding the Proper Motivation for Children’s Weight Loss

Getting and keeping a child motivated is no easy task.  In fact, even adults find it difficult at times to find what motivates them and drives them to reach for success in all that they do.  Motivation is defined as the reason one has for acting a certain way and behaving in a certain manner.  To begin to fully understand motivation, one must first discover the original reason the decided to start something in the first place.  In terms of children’s weight loss, that motivation may come from wanting to be in better shape to try out for a sports team or maybe to be more confident in their own skin.  Until one finds what truly motivates them, success can be limited.  So what is the number one reason to find what motivates children in terms of their weight loss journey?

Finding the Proper Motivation Keeps Children Moving Forward

Reminding a child or young adult why they started something in the first place may be enough to help them continue in the right direction.  Throughout a weight loss journey, there are several ups and downs however if one can always remember what motivates them to move forward and not give up under any circumstances, their chances of success can increase dramatically. Encourage them to never lose sight of the end goal, and that success follows proper preparation and hard work. Before any of this however, it is important to ensure that their reasoning behind their behavior and actions is valid and not inaccurate.  If constantly encouraging them and reminding them that they will look and feel better about themselves does not motivate them, then find something different.  Repeatedly using the wrong cues to motivate will only prevent forward progress.

Take some time to figure out what truly motivates you to succeed.  Is it the people around you? Your family? Your kids? Your end goal?  Whatever it may be, use those factors in a positive way and in a way that will ensure future success and continued motivation for future endeavors.
