Statenville was founded in 1858 as seat of the newly formed Echols County. It is named for early store owner Henry Staten, but was erroneously incorporated as Statesville in 1859. By the 1980's, the state officially called it Statenville, as the locals always had. In 1995, the city lost its charter. The latest population, for Statenville Census Designated Place, was 1,096.
